A message from Bernice Langley: My journey began in Sierra Leone and brought me to the United Kingdom in 1993. There, I pursued a degree in Youth and Community Work and trained as a mental health and learning disability nurse. While these experiences shaped my professional path, it was a deeply personal moment that truly defined my purpose.
When I noticed a delay in my son’s speech, I immersed myself in intensive speech and language therapies to better support him. What began as a mother’s concern became a transformative journey—one that deepened my understanding of his needs and introduced me to the broader realities of autism spectrum disorder.
Today, I am incredibly proud to share that my son graduated from university with first-class honours at the age of 21 and is now working as an investment analyst in media planning and buying. His journey is a testament to what is possible with the right support, belief, and opportunity.
These personal experiences, alongside my own life story, have driven me to become a passionate global advocate for children with autism. My mission is to improve the quality of life for children—especially those facing economic hardship and social stigma—both in the UK and within Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities worldwide.
Over the years, I have dedicated myself to community service across hospitals, schools, and outreach programmes. In 2018, I founded Autism Gifted Hands, a private company delivering essential sensory-based interventions and support services for children with autism and their families.
It has been an honour to receive recognition for this work, including the Research, Education and Workforce Development Award and the Securing an Improved Patient Experience Award from the Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust.
My journey continues with an unwavering commitment to raising awareness, mobilising resources, and empowering children with autism through education and support—so they can lead fulfilling lives and realise their full potential.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
